Art Nude is Very In - Look at the Sales

Welcome to the ArtNet Nude 100, a listing of the top 100 nudes sold at auction worldwide in the past 10 years as determined by ArtNet's unique auction database, Auctions Online.

Our methodology was straightforward. We instructed ArtNet Auctions Online to rank the 1.5 million art works in our database by price, and then selected the nudes from the list. All the usual suspects are there: Picasso, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne -- even de Kooning.

Our purpose is more complex. Why compile the ArtNet Nude 100? Because we never heard of anyone hiding a stack of still-life pictures under their mattress! More seriously, we wanted to begin an investigation into the populist roots of fine art in America -- that is to say, not in the salon but in the saloon. The ArtNet Nude 100 is democratic undertaking, designed for the art tourist. It's an unalloyed pitch for hits.

We hope the ArtNet Nude 100 will draw attention to Auctions Online, which was only recently moved into our Web site. This amazing bit of computer programming is a uniquely independent appraisal tool for people buying or selling art -- in addition to the various uses it also might have during the art world's slow summer months.

Finally, we should note that, despite the changes in the contemporary art world wrought since the 1960s by the feminist revolution, the art market remains -- at least at the high end -- a resolutely patriarchal place. (Readers are encouraged to develop this theme at length on their own; we will not do so here.) At this atavistic level, it seems, the practice of art involves a male artist looking and a female model on display. Quaint though such a picture may be, we still say that portrayal of the nude can approach the sublime. And we hope that this traditional frame can be made to fit the issues of gender psychology that animate so much art practice today.

Before we present the ArtNet Nude 100, however, allow us a few observations.

  1. As is probably the case in the art market overall, Picasso is the winner, hands down, taking the top three places. Surprisingly, the #1 and #2 spots are occupied by Le miroir, Picasso's famed 1932 portrait of his lover Marie-Thérèse. Needless to say, this image is not your typical pin-up -- though it is widely considered to be a consummately romantic picture despite its modernistic distortions. Paintings by Picasso -- a total of 15 -- tied with Renoir as the most frequent on the list and Picasso works generated the most money in total sales -- over $105 million. Six Picassos are among the top 20 on the list.

  2. Renoir's 15 nudes sold for about $47.5 million, less than half of Picasso's total for the same number of works. Two Renoirs make the top 20. Four Renoir works sold more than once -- Baigneuse sold three times, and Après le Bain, Baigneuse debout and Deux baigneuses each sold twice.

  3. Alberto Giacometti's series of standing women appear a number of times in the Nude 100. Grande femme Debout I sold three times, tying with Renoir's Baigneuse and Degas' La toilette -- the three most frequently sold works. Giacometti's Grande femme debout III and Femme debout are also on the list.

  4. In addition to Picasso and Renoir, leading purveyors of the nude are Matisse, with 12, and Degas, with 11. Two post-war artists make the ArtNet Nude 100 -- Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning .

  5. Old Masters only make a modest appearance in the Nude 100. Needless to say, masterpieces by such artists as Botticelli or Rubens rarely come up for auction. Titian makes #5, however, and Veronese comes in at #34.

  6. Only one nude male figure makes the list, Bourdelle's Herakles Archer (#69, #98). Figure groups by Cézanne (#15, #48) and other artists, however, do include males.

  7. The total hammer price of the top 100 is $357,244,861. Although the list includes 100 works, only 32 artists are represented.

At the Crossroads
by Jerry Saltz

With exhibitions of John Currin, Arshile Gorky and Lucas Samaras on its fall schedule, the Whitney Museum of American Art should perk up. It better, because this institution is in trouble brought on by good intentions, bad curators, meddling trustees and an inept director. Now the Whitney is trying to right things by turning back the clock: Adam Weinberg, its former curator of collections, recently director of Andover's Addison Gallery, returned as its director on October 1. Weinberg is an encouraging choice; he's smart, convivial, knows the board and loves art. In order to save this ailing institution, however, he must do several thorny things while standing up to its pesky trustees. Hopefully, this museum's future will be brighter than its recent past. Before we look forward, however, we need to look back.
Last May, after five desultory years on the job, hapless Maxwell Anderson announced he was resigning his directorship. Now he's gone, having done a lot of damage. Unlike at the Guggenheim, where all roads lead to and from its domineering director, the Whitney's problems are systemic, and start with its 39 trustees, many of whom are passionate and knowledgeable, but a few of whom are bullies. In any case, the institution has a history of fickleness and compromise. Anderson was the result of these shortcomings. In 1998, the energetic David Ross, who as director ushered the Whitney into and through the culture wars, left the museum to be director of SF MoMA.

Skittish and perhaps envious of MoMA's erudite director, Glenn Lowry, the Whitney's board cast about for a Lowry clone. Enter Anderson, then director of the Art Gallery of Ontario. Anderson apparently enticed the trustees with managerial speak and corporate airs. He looked the part and was a smoothie; he was one of them and was hired.

Within weeks of taking on the job, Anderson blundered. Before communicating his intentions to his curators, he spoke to The New York Times about "restructuring curatorial portfolios" and some managerial hooey called "Power Up." Whether they were pushed or left voluntarily, soon three of the Whitney's top curators, Thelma Golden, Lisa Phillips and Elisabeth Sussman, were gone. This created a vacuum that Anderson parlayed into a crisis. Attempting perhaps to appease the art world and the social circuit, he made three flawed hires: Marla Prather as curator of post-war art, Sylvia Wolf as curator of photography, and Lawrence Rinder as curator of contemporary art. Prather mounted perhaps the worst museum show ever of a great artist, "Robert Rauschenberg: Synapsis Shuffle," Wolf, the horrendous Michal Rovner show and the benign but pointless Kenneth Josephson survey. (More on Rinder later.) Meanwhile, Anderson ignored the question of what to do about the once proficient Barbara Haskell, a Whitney curator for more than 25 years.

Shows outside the jurisdiction of these curators, while not gems, were commendable. I'm not enamored of either Joan Mitchell or Wayne Thiebaud, but both their retrospectives were credible. Better were the Barbara Kruger, Sol LeWitt and Alice Neel shows. The exhibition of early video art, "Into the Light," and the Jacob Lawrence survey were both superb, and "The Quilts of Gee's Bend," while patronizing, was a huge hit.

But Anderson couldn't leave well enough alone. Citing financial problems and making vague allusions to 9-11, he canceled the much anticipated Eva Hesse retrospective that Sussman had originally developed for the Whitney. Things might not have soured so had Anderson found a way to keep this show (as Lowry, Philippe de Montebello, Lowery Sims, or even Thomas Krens might), replaced Haskell and retained Golden, who was then working on the 2000 biennial as well as the lively "Freestyle" exhibition (eventually mounted at the Studio Museum).

Instead, we got Haskell's flawed Elie Nadelman retrospective, the Diller + Scofidio, Rovner and Rauschenberg fiascoes, the dreadful 2000 biennial (overseen by Rinder and five other Anderson-appointed curators), Rinder's weak biennial two years later, and his iffy "BitStreams" and arid "The American Effect." None of Rinder's shows needed to be as bad as they were; all contained outstanding artists. He's also adept at spotting and highlighting trends. Rinder's intentions are exemplary. Unfortunately, his eye isn't. He's better suited to the issue-driven atmosphere of a university art museum, someplace more about ideas than objects.

Now the Whitney is at a crossroads. Weinberg needs to deal with Rinder and anyone responsible for Diller + Scofidio. After reassuring the rest of the Whitney's talented, underpaid staff, Weinberg should then hire art-oriented curators, people with good eyes, not good politics or social connections, and annul Anderson's ridiculous "portfolios." Next, because 39 are too many trustees, 10 should graciously step down. Three or four highly regarded, mid-career artists -- individuals who would attend meetings and not be afraid to speak their minds -- should join Chuck Close on the board (I nominate Elizabeth Murray). The Haskell question has to be dealt with; historical shows must get juicier and more relevant; and many more exhibitions of living artists must be mounted. All this could lead to good things. I'm hoping that even if the upcoming biennial is a failure, it'll be an art-driven one rather than an academic one, which is what we've been getting. If Weinberg does nothing, the Whitney may feel more user-friendly but it will keep drifting into darkness.

Manet at the Prado

Museo del Prado -
Madrid, ES Spain

This October sees the opening at the Museo del Prado of the first exhibition in Spain devoted to the work of Édouard Manet (1832-1883). The exhibition, entitled Manet at the Prado, has been made possible through the sponsorship of the Fundacion Winterthur, and will feature 110 of the greatest works by this French painter (58 paintings, 30 prints and 22 drawings). This is the most significant retrospective to be devoted to Manet’s work since the one held in Paris and New York in 1983. The exhibition is part of a far-ranging collaboration between the Museo del Prado, the Musee d’Orsay (Paris) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). Read Indepth Article

Surrealism and Modernism from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

Phillips Collection -
Washington, DC USA

The Phillips Collection welcomes Surrealism and Modernism from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, a selection of 59 paintings, collages, and sculptures by the most significant avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century. Surrealism and Modernism represents an outstanding array of major artistic movements in the twentieth century—from expressionist landscapes and classic abstract painting to surrealist illusionism and abstract expressionism. This exhibition also provides a look at a unique era in the history of collecting by American museums, when aesthetically adventurous directors struggled to make the case for modern art to a suspicious public through purchases and exhibitions of work by living artists from Europe, America and Latin America. Although located a few hours away from New York, the Wadsworth Atheneum in the 1930s scored a series of acquisition firsts of the kind that might have been expected of the Museum of Modern Art.
