Santa's Search Checklist: Marketing Tips to Make Your Pockets Jingle.
For someone who spends most of the year in the North Pole, Santa Claus is well-known all around the world. Most Sellers don't have a team of marketing elves or a snazzy outfit to draw a huge following, but here are few tips to boost your appearance in searches and make your web presence a force to be reckoned with this holiday season:

1. Create blogs and build links to them

Search for free blogs and you're bound to find a range of sites where you can create and publish your own blog. While some sites cater to certain types of interests and media formats, there are plenty of basic blogging services that are quick to setup and easy to use. Even if you don't plan on using multiple blog sites immediately, we recommend snagging your desired usernames before they're all taken. Blogs are a great place to promote your designs, share new ideas, advertise promotions that include your products, and connect with other Zazzlers. Use the Link-to-This tool on each product page to copy and paste a link and/or an image directly into your blog posts. Don't forget that you can earn 15% in referrals just by signing into your Zazzle account. (If you aren't logged in, your Associate ID won't be included in the link and you won't get credit for any referrals.)
Wordpress, OnSugar, Posterous, Blog.com, Blogetery, Inube, and InsaneJournal are all great places to get started.

2. Set up shop on Facebook and Twitter

Whether or not you use these social networking sites for personal purposes, open a separate account to promote your Zazzle store. Think hard about your Facebook page name, as it is one of the most important ranking factors, and you cannot change it. If you have a certain design niche, try to include a keyword phrase in your page name (as in SellerSuzy Wedding Invitations). Also, be sure to incorporate your store URL as well as your top keywords in the info section. Same goes for your username and bio on Twitter. Once you've made your pages, make sure to share the links widely to friends and family, on your blogs and other websites.

Other great social networking sites that you may want to check out are LinkedIn, Squidoo, and Kaboodle.

3. Spread the link love

If you already have several blogs, make sure to link them to each other. In addition to linking to yourself everywhere, link to other Zazzlers who blog, and retweet often. When you spread the link love, other people are more likely to respond in kind, so be generous with your linkage and you just may find yourself higher up in the search engine results. If you link to another Zazzler's products, make sure that your Associate ID is attached, so that you'll earn referral credit for any sales made within 45 days after a customer clicks on your link.

4. Use your keywords, but don't over-do it

Be sure to use good keywords in your blog post titles, and keep your keyword phrases closer to the beginning of your tweets. (That means put the @myfriend tags at the end of the tweet instead of the beginning.)
Remember that links and pictures will only get you so far with the search engines. You'll draw more links to your blogs, tweets, etc. if your content is thoughtful, meaningful, and genuine. Be sure to mix up the different types of posts that you make. Whether you talk about your day, or share a tip about Zazzling, this content will help to keep your blog balanced and interesting. If you're having writer's block, try searching for "what to blog about".

5. Be consistent

Try to post on your various sites at least 3 times a week. Search engine crawlers love fresh content, so make sure to keep them well-nourished. After you've finished a post, you'll need to make sure that the search engines are aware that you've updated your site. In order to do this, use Pingler, to "ping" your blog posts and get them indexed. Pinging is like ringing a dinner bell and yelling "Come and get it!" Simply enter the URL of your recent blog post or your RSS feed into Pingler, and you'll see it in the search results in no time.

6. Show and tell

If you or your Zazzler friends win a cool award like a Today's Best or a Zazzle Artist Award, don't forget to share the good news. If your design was picked as one of the best out of billions of products on Zazzle, it definitely deserves to be bragged about! So don't be shy, post a link on Facebook, on Twitter, and on your blogs. You've earned the recognition.
Just one reminder: Don't rename your products to say TBA or Zazzle Artist Award winner because each time you rename a product, it loses some of the link power that it has built up. If anything, your product title should be optimized to include your top keyword phrase.

7. Get automated

Running multiple sites can be overwhelming and time-consuming, so here a few tricks to automate your updates.

  • Use Twitterfeed to automatically update your Twitter and Facebook whenever you update your blogs or your store.
  • Set up Facebook Notes to include your store or blog RSS feed. On your Facebook Fan Page, scroll down to "Notes", select "Edit", then click "Import a Blog".
  • Use the Wordpress App on LinkedIn to sync your Wordpress blog posts with your LinkedIn profile. You can even filter your posts with a special LinkedIn tag.
  • Schedule your blog posts. Some blog sites like Wordpress and Posterous allow you to save blog posts to be automatically posted in the future. This is great if you don't have a lot of time during the week to update. Simply write all of your posts on the weekend, and then just set it and forget it!
  • Setup your email account to automatically forward to your blog, then use the Link-to-This tool to email products to yourself. This method eliminates the copy and paste process and works with Wordpress, OnSugar, Posterous, and many other free blog hosts that allow posting via email. Note: You'll probably want to create a new email address to do this.

So, there you have it! Use these marketing tips to promote your products this holiday season, and you'll be singing Jingle Bells all the way to the bank.
